Amanda Wilkes has her summer completely planned – work at the veterinary hospital, ride at Rough and Ready Stable, and hang out with her best friend Samantha. But when she loses her job to the boss’s nephew and Samantha takes a position as a working student in another state, Amanda realizes that this summer is going to be anything but predictable. Before leaving town, Samantha asks Amanda to promise her two things. The first request is that Amanda takes care of Samantha’s new upper level event horse prospect, Indefensible. While a talented and fearless jumper, Indy has the reputation of being unpredictable and a danger to his rider. Amanda is thrilled to have the chance to work with the horse she has been in love with since the first time she saw him. However, she soon learns that her love is not enough to prevent Indy’s bad behavior from surfacing. Samantha’s second request is that Amanda be kind to Justin, the pre-vet student who took her position at the veterinary hospital. Having sworn to hate the person who took her job, Amanda is dismayed to find herself drawn to the handsome and charming Justin, and with the encouragement of her friends and family, she begins to develop a relationship with him that goes beyond simple friendship. As she struggles with her feelings of loneliness in Samantha’s absence and the mixed emotions of her first real love interest, Amanda struggles to unravel the source of and cure for Indy’s dangerous behavior. She knows that his future as an event horse can only be secured if he becomes a safe, reliable mount and she will soon discover that his very life depends upon it.

I literally just finished this book and while I enjoyed the story, I really wish it had been proof-read before going to publication. If I saw "loose" instead of "lose" one more time, I was going to SCREAM. Also, the punctuation was SERIOUSLY lacking. If it was used at all, it was often used incorrectly. Much of the story had one person talking on top of another, all in one line instead of clearly defined conversations.

The biggest issue I had with this story was Sam's accident. While the author might know about horses, she knows nothing about how EMS works. A private individual can not call for a helicopter and have it show up within minutes without the fire department there to set up a landing zone, especially when there's horses around. That's just plain ridiculous. And to say 4 Paramedics came out of the helicopter doesn't happen either. There was also too much blood described for the type of injury. And why do people who write books about horses think there has to be Colic involved to make the story interesting?

That being said, I did learn a lot more about eventing than I already knew and I don't feel like it was a waste of my money. There were a lot of major characters, but I didn't get lost between them because the author kept them all focused within the main character of Amanda and didn't have separate side-stories of their own, which made the story easy to follow.

Just got done reading this book ,and its going to the tackroom library for others to read. Great tale about two teens who learn so much about life and their horses. I'd suggest this to any kid wanting to learn more about the great sport of 3-day eventing !
What an exciting story involving young love, the fascination with eventing and the horse culture, and wholesome adventures. It has been some time since I saw a good young adult book and I enjoyed it. A great book for those who are into eventing, or for those who want to learn a little more about it, and experience it through the young adult's eyes.
This is a great story that really captures the ups and downs of the horse business. The author really knows horses and eventing, which keeps it authentic. Good characters and plot, very enjoyable.
Great read for teenagers and young adults interested in eventing. Shows how young people get started in this tough business.
This was a quick read and was very enjoyable. It was nice that it accurately portrayed eventing and the training that leads up to competition.
I bought this book for my 10 year old daughter. I wasn't sure if it was appropriate so I preread it. It was perfect for her. It's the story of girls and their horses and showing in three day events. She has read it 5 times already. I definitely recommend it for horse loving girls.
Indefensible by Rebecca Frankeny is an honest book about a girl that loves horses and the sport of eventing. I believe honest is the best descriptor because throughout, Frankeny portrays horses, horse care, and the sport of eventing with accuracy and unusual perception. A young person reading this book will learn details about how to ride a cross country course, how to care for horses, and how a typical interaction with a veterinarian might take place, all set in the context of an interesting story. While the story places the reader in the glamorous world of professional and amateur event riding, it is still about every-day, average people. It takes place in Missouri, the protagonist Amanda is the daughter of a single working mother, the professional trainer Mike has a wife, child, and something of a start-up operation in his Rough and Ready Stables. Amanda is the kind of role model I would want my daughter to embrace she has a strong work ethic and is driven by her love of horses and the sport. She is careful to put her growing relationship with Justin into perspective with her other important goals. There are exciting turns in the lives of the people, and the horses, that keep the story moving forward and the characters show their love and care for each other in a truly hearwarming fashion. I loved this book and all the fine details not common in many stories about girls and horses.
