I recently purchased this book and I must say, I have a soft spot for it. I found this book by chance as I was “googling” away. It was just recently published this year! The story is ten pages long, not including the picture pages or author notes/description. It is bilingual in Khmer and English and this book is suitable for ages 5 and up. The book consists of work from multiple artists. It is a thin book, easy to carry around."In My Village" is a great read for any Khmer parent and child. It is a picture book that humbly captures the life of Khmer children in Cambodia. It captures their lifestyle from morning to night. It is an easy reading book that can definitely capture your imagination.
I will leave you with some quotes from the book on the back cover to help paint a picture:
"Water buffalo wade in the cool mud.
The water twinkles in the morning and is still at night.
In my village, there is a pond where the children fish…”

In My Village Lauren Iida Carolyn R Hall 9780692227459 Books Reviews
Fantastic book with a story and presentation that is really relevant to the village children with whom we are working in Cambodia. Being written in Khmer and English means children (and adults) of all ages can enjoy. Highly recommend to anyone working with Khmer children or for people learning the 'alternate' language.
I recieved this book as a gift for my daughter's birthday. Great book. Pictures are nice and khmer font is legible. However, there was a few typos with the khmer sentences. Overall, still great option amongst very few out there.
I sponsor a child in Cambodia and this book was perfect to send to her
I'm a preschool teacher and Khmer and love sharing this story with my kids at school as well as my little one at home. This helps me get them exposed to the letters and sounds and translates so easily.
I bought it for my little cousin. Her father speaks Cambodian.
This is a very sweet book that my mother in law can read to her grand children. She can not read English so when her grandchildren ask her to read a book its heart breaking to her say she can't read it. So I found a few books in Khmer that she can read!
A beautiful addition to the world of children's books which adults can also enjoy.
The language is lyrical and evocative. The repeated phrase "in my village" is the gateway to the sights and sounds of a typical Cambodian village.
The illustrations (in a variety of artistic styles) are a great jumping off point to begin the discussion of life in another part of the world.
Written as a bilingual book in Khmer and English, even the text gives us a window on another culture.
So why would I recommend a book written in and about Cambodia to a North American audience?
Because I believe that if you would truly want to gift a child with an experience of a different culture you cannot do better than this book.
And all written simply and elegantly with visuals that resonate so strongly with me that I can feel the red dust of Cambodia between my toes.
I intend using this book with Cambodian children, but its audience deserves to be much wider.
